Have you ever wondered why successful small businesses have used short form video in their marketing? Are you someone who is not comfortable with speaking to a camera and putting yourself out there? This was exactly my position until I chose to make a change earlier this year. Now, I’m totally comfortable being in front of the camera and love creating content that provides value to my target audience. By doing so, I’ve noticed an increase in business by simply talking to those I can provide value to.
In the article I’m going to share with you the power of short-form video content. I also share with you 3 action steps that can help to begin and harness short-form video as a tool to grow your online business.
Short-Form Video Content
In the fast-paced digital world, staying relevant means adapting to new trends and strategies—and short-form video content is one of the most potent tools at your disposal. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts are not just for entertainment; they have become powerful channels for business growth, providing a direct line to millions of potential customers. As a small business owner, it’s time to recognize the immense potential of short-form videos and leverage them to expand your reach, engage your audience, and ultimately, boost your bottom line. Waiting for the “right time” could mean missing out on a massive opportunity.
Short-form video content is a game-changer because of its ability to grab attention quickly. In a world where the average attention span is shrinking, getting your message across in 30 seconds or less is a skill every business needs. Unlike traditional ads or lengthy video content, short-form videos are designed to be quick and impactful. They allow you to convey your brand message in an engaging way that’s easy for your audience to consume. The best part? You don’t need a big production budget. A smartphone, some creativity, and a clear understanding of your audience’s needs can be enough to create compelling content that resonates.
Moreover, short-form videos are highly shareable. When you post a video that resonates with your audience, they’re more likely to share it with their friends, family, and followers—spreading your message far beyond your immediate reach. This kind of organic exposure is invaluable, especially for small businesses that may not have the marketing budgets of larger companies. A single video can go viral, introducing your brand to thousands, even millions, of people you may never have reached through traditional methods. This isn’t just about building awareness; it’s about creating meaningful connections with potential customers who can become loyal supporters of your brand.
Short-form video content also offers an unparalleled way to build authenticity and trust. People want to see the real, human side of the brands they interact with, and short videos provide an intimate way to showcase your personality, behind-the-scenes processes, and customer success stories. This transparency helps to build a strong rapport with your audience, making them more likely to choose your business over a competitor’s. In a world saturated with ads and sales pitches, authenticity is what sets you apart. A short video that showcases your genuine passion for your product or service can be far more persuasive than a perfectly polished advertisement.
But why is it so important to jump on this trend right now? The answer is simple: momentum. Short-form video content is gaining traction at an incredible pace. Social media platforms are prioritizing these videos in their algorithms, meaning your content is more likely to be seen if it fits this format. This gives small businesses a golden opportunity to increase their visibility without spending a fortune on ads. However, as more businesses begin to recognize this trend, the competition will inevitably become fiercer. Acting now gives you the advantage of standing out before the market becomes saturated.
The time for excuses is over. If you’ve been telling yourself that you don’t have the time, the skills, or the content ideas for short-form video, it’s time to change that mindset. The tools you need are right in your pocket, and with a bit of practice, creating effective videos can become a quick part of your daily routine. Start small—create a 15-second clip introducing your product, sharing a customer testimonial, or highlighting a fun moment behind the scenes. Remember, perfection isn’t the goal; connection is. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll become, and the easier it will be to integrate video creation into your marketing strategy.
Short-form video content isn’t just a passing trend—it’s a powerful tool for building connections, driving engagement, and reaching new customers. As a small business owner, you have an incredible opportunity to tap into this medium and take your business to new heights. But to reap the benefits, you must take action now. Waiting could mean falling behind, while those who act today will be the ones who seize the spotlight tomorrow. Don’t let this chance slip through your fingers. Pick up your phone, hit record, and start sharing your story with the world. Your audience is out there waiting—it’s time to meet them where they are.
Action Step
Now that you have a better understanding of the power of short-form video, let’s focus on taking action. The following three steps are what I did to overcome my fear of the camera:
- Pick up your phone and press record. Just get accustomed to talking about a topic. Do this daily until you get used to the process.
- Decide which social media platform you want to use. Talk about a topic 3 times a day for 30 consecutive days.
- For me, it helped to use a tool such as Capcut with their teleprompter. Having the material prepared was helpful to get through the recording.
