It’s no secret, we’ve all been found guilty of aimless scrolling on social media. The endless barrage of content we live with can be overwhelming to say the least. But when it comes to making sure you have success with your ad campaigns, it’s a necessity to capture your audience’s attention.

I wish there was a magic wand you could wave to successfully capture attention every time you put something out there. Unfortunately, there is not. You must try several techniques until one works, that’s how this game works. Essentially, you test variations and when you find a winner you go all in on that one.

If I were to give you some proven techniques to begin to stop the scroll with would that be helpful? Great! The following are a few strategies my team uses daily to attempt to stop the scroll to those we are advertising to.

Stopping the Scroll

In the crowded world of social media, where endless posts, ads, and updates vie for attention, your creative has one job: to stop the scroll. If your ad doesn’t immediately capture attention, it doesn’t matter how well-targeted your audience is or how enticing your offer may be—it won’t even get noticed. For small business owners with limited budgets, developing engaging, scroll-stopping creative is essential to make the most of every dollar spent on targeted ads.

The key to creating engaging ad visuals is to stand out. Your creative needs to disrupt the viewer’s feed by being bold, unique, and relevant. Bright colors, unusual compositions, or eye-catching animations are great tools for grabbing attention. For example, a high-quality image of your product in use, paired with vibrant overlays or bold text, can instantly make a viewer pause. Alternatively, incorporating movement, such as a quick video or a GIF, can break the monotony of static content and draw the eye.

Your visuals should tell a story. People are naturally drawn to narratives, so show them how your product or service fits into their life. For instance, instead of just showcasing your product, highlight how it solves a problem or creates a desirable outcome. A video showing a satisfied customer enjoying the benefits of your offering can be far more compelling than a simple product shot.

Personalization is another powerful strategy. Audiences respond to content that feels tailored to their needs and interests. Use language, imagery, and scenarios that resonate with your target audience. If you’re targeting busy parents, your creative might feature relatable scenes of family life and how your product simplifies their daily routine. The more your audience feels that your ad is speaking directly to them, the more likely they are to engage.

Your ad copy plays a critical supporting role in stopping the scroll. The first line of your text needs to spark curiosity, address a pain point, or promise a solution. Questions like, “Tired of struggling with [problem]?” or bold statements like, “Finally, a solution that works!” can hook viewers and compel them to read more. Pair this with a strong call-to-action (CTA) that tells viewers exactly what you want them to do next, whether it’s clicking a link, watching a video, or making a purchase.

Authenticity can also set your creative apart. In a world of polished, professional ads, genuine content often resonates more. User-generated content, behind-the-scenes glimpses, or testimonials can create a sense of trust and relatability that polished ads might lack. Don’t be afraid to experiment with raw, real moments that showcase the heart of your business.

Finally, always test and optimize your creative. What works for one audience or campaign may not work for another. Run A/B tests with different visuals, headlines, and formats to see what captures attention and drives engagement. Analyze the data and refine your approach based on what performs best.

Developing creative that stops the scroll is both an art and a science. For small business owners, it’s a chance to make a lasting first impression and draw your audience into your message. When your visuals and messaging work together to captivate, connect, and convert, your ad campaigns can go from unnoticed to unstoppable.
