In any business, you need sales to survive. However before you start selling, would you like to know a secret? How would business development be if you had a solid understanding of what step to take before you start pitching your service or product?

After all, you need to develop an audience that will pay attention to you before you can convert them to each step in the sales process.

I’m about to share with you the number one step you need to take before you begin to attempt to conquer conversions. This step is often overlooked by new business owners and experienced ones as well. That step is to make sure you have a solid understanding of what problem your business solves.

What Problem Does Your Business Solve?

In the world of business, particularly for small business owners trying to make their mark, the golden question is, “What problem does your business solve?” This isn’t just a marketing strategy or a catchy tagline. It’s the foundation upon which everything else is built. Before you even think about promoting your business, taking the time to understand the problem you’re solving is not just beneficial—it’s essential. This one insight will become the heart of your business’s identity and the reason your audience chooses you over competitors.

Let’s be real: potential customers are not interested in every detail of what you offer. Their primary concern is whether your solution will genuinely help them. They want to know if your business can ease their daily struggles, make life easier, or unlock new opportunities. By clearly defining the problem you solve, you’re positioning your business as the answer they’ve been searching for. Without this clarity, your marketing efforts will struggle to hit the mark, and your audience will likely move on to someone who resonates with their needs. This is why understanding your customer’s pain points and crafting your solutions around them is so crucial.

When you address a real problem that people care about, you tap into an emotional connection that keeps their attention. By focusing on their issues, rather than diving headfirst into selling your product or service, you build trust. They begin to see you not as another business vying for their money but as a partner who understands their situation and genuinely wants to help. This trust is the bridge that converts curiosity into action. When your audience feels that you understand them, they become much more receptive to hearing about how your solution can make their lives better, which naturally leads them to see buying from you as the next logical step.

Once you’ve locked in on the problem you’re solving, every piece of content you create should reinforce this understanding. Your content becomes a direct reflection of your empathy for their struggles and your confidence in your solution. This alignment ensures that you attract an audience who truly needs what you’re offering, making your marketing efforts far more effective and targeted. Instead of wasting energy chasing everyone, you’re reaching those who already want what you have to offer because they see you as the solution to their problem.

The time to take action on this isn’t tomorrow or next month; it’s right now. The marketplace is saturated, and audiences are bombarded with options. The sooner you can clarify the problem you solve, the quicker you can cut through the noise and establish your presence. Remember, your audience has countless choices, and if they don’t see the value in your solution right away, they’ll likely move on. Define the problem, speak to the heart of it, and watch as your business stands out and becomes the one they can’t ignore.

Action Step

Take a few minutes to write down what problem your business solves. Focus on one problem first, even if you have multiple product or service offerings that achieve multiple solutions. Create one overarching statement that you could use in your marketing efforts that clearly communicates your solution to other people’s problems. Once you have completed this activity, then you can begin to use it within all of your content you create to promote your solution.
